About the Author
Sophie Stallman was born in Poland in 1926. Her father, an estate owner, died of a heart ailment half a year after Sophie was born. Her mother, a beautiful lady and acclaimed pianist, sold the estate and moved with Sophie and her older sister, Ann, to the city of Bydgoszcz, where she lead her life among local society.
In 1939 life they knew ceased to exist; Hitler invaded Poland.
By 1945, after a devastating five years of war, Sophie found herself in Germany, then married, had two children and in 1956 emigrated to the United States. She started teaching physical education in San Francisco Bay Area private schools, but eventually concentrated on gymnastics. She organized and directed a competitive team and became instrumental in establishing the sport of gymnastics in Northern California.
Sophie currently resides in Portola Valley California.
